Overview

This is book one in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. Percy is your typical, or not so typical 12 year old boy. He’s been thrown out of school after school. He’s been diagnosed with ADHD, and Dyslexia. He’s got a stepfather who’s verbally and emotionally abusive to both him and his mother. A mother who is hard working, but is keeping some secrets from him. Things are about to change for Percy. He’s about to embark on an adventure worthy of the gods of Olympus. The adventure is a quest to find a thunderbolt stolen from the god Zeus.

Review

I really liked this book. I’ve always been a big fan of Greek Mythology. This book, while initially geared towards younger readers, is something enjoyable, I think by all ages. If you know nothings about Greek Mythology, I think this will begin an interest in it. If your a fan of it, like I am, you’ll enjoy seeing all the various mythological creatures and gods show up. The basic premise is of a similar vein to Harry Potter. A young boy is sent on amazing adventures, a school (or in this case, a summer camp) is involved, etc. I couldn’t resist continuing to read to find out how they got out of things next, or to see who shows up next.

I think if you’re a parent of 12-13 year olds, or just a parent who enjoys light adventures, then you’ll probably enjoy Percy Jackson. I know I did, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series. There’s no foul language. There may be some stronger scenes similar to what you’d see in Wizard of Oz. All in all though, I’d say it’s a book fit for the whole family to enjoy.

This movie is soon to be released to theaters near you. I am including the link to the trailer. Enjoy.
